Integrated cataract project for underserved rural population

From June 2019 to date, GLOBCOM has implemented a cataract project covering two sub-counties of Siaya county; Alego Usonga and Bondo sub-counties. the project is funded by the Fred Hollows Foundation Kenya (FHFK), an Australian based NGO with headquarters in Nairobi. The program focuses on cataract, an eye condition which is the largest cause of avoidable blindness in the country, making up almost 60% of all cases of blindness. This current project is a four year project that started in January 2022 and ends in December 2025.

Highlight of key achievements in the year 2022

  • A total of 81,900 people were reached and sensitized on eye health
  • Conducted eye screening to a total of 7,600 people
  • Conducted a total of 332 free cataract surgeries.
  • Provided treatment to over 2,841 people with other eye diseases
