Gender based violence is a malignant cancer on the conscience of humanity. Nearly one in every three women experiences violence associated with their sex and gender, but justice systems remain inadequate to expeditiously address the magnitude of this crisis.
A 15-year-old girl was rescued from the hand of predator father and from the associated harmful environment where he got defiled by her own biological father, – someone she looks up to for
the rest of her life as the source of security, hope and sustenance. The girl sat for her Kenya Certificate of Primary Education in 2022 and was set to join Secondary education this year 2023, when this happened. Following this ordeal, her hopes for further education were totally shuttered. She was left heartbroken, hopeless and with unbearable psychological trauma. Every time she would break down in tears. To compound her problem further, her mother who was supposed to stand with and console her disappointingly and shockingly decided to protect the perpetrator by making several attempts and threats to her to let go of the case and cover up her father who was now a wanted criminal on the run.
As fate would have it and to her luck, GLOBCOM was informed about her case and facilitated her rescue through maternal aunt who agreed to accommodate her. Since then, the aunt has also received numerous threats from the girl’s mother who wanted the victim (her husband) back home.
GLOBCOM and the girl remain sincerely grateful to Kenya Red Cross, the Prime partner which has offered the girl a one-year scholarship currently admitted at Hawinga Girls’ boarding Secondary School in form one. The girl shall need another scholarship for the remaining three years to guarantee her retention and completion of secondary education and psychosocial support as she struggles to overcome the trauma of defilement. We are calling upon well-wishers and people of good will to support education of this girl and say NO to sexual & gender based violence. It is painful to note in disbelief that the perpetrator is still free in – hiding despite attempts by the police to arrest him.
