Salvation At Last, Story Of Romanus Okumu A Cataract Survivor.

Mr. Romanus Okumu is a 74 years old man from Gem Sub-county.  He has four children, three of whom are now independed while the last born, a 11 year old boy, is still in his custody. He narrates that Enos (his lat born) is not of much assistance to his needs. Mr. Okumu has been unable to see for some time now and operates like a blind person who must be supported for his daily needs. To add salt to the injury, Mr. Okumu’s wife, Ruth Awinja 44 years old, is totally blind.

Ruth became blind at 12 years old after her friend accidentally pierced her eyes and completely changing her life situation. She studied at the Thika School for the blind. It has not been easy for this small family which lives in a remote village somewhere in Gem Sub-county.

Treatment or any form of cure was un-imaginable to Mr. Okumu, his own brothers had discouraged him claiming that his condition was as aresult of old age and nothing could be done.

Never the less, God has been a blessing to them, it was Mr. Okumu’s wife who has always been optimistic that all is not lost and sort information from different sources and always keeping ears open for help. Although they live in Gem, Ruth heard about the Hawinga outreach through Ruma CBO working in Gem and nothing could stop her from bringing her husband for review. She could not wait any longer for this, she travelled all the distance to get assisted.

True to her prayers, the doctors confirmed that her husband’s condition could be helped and enable him regain his sight back. He was diagonised with Bilateral  cataract. Both eyes were operated on the same day and at last the good news is that the old man can see clearly again. We were all filled with joy and happiness for him when we met him during the post-ops follow up. We visited him to his home and when we got to his home in Gem, none of his neighbors and relatives could believe that he was able to see, the wife was filled with lots of joy since they had already lost hope on him. He could be seen him jumping and making lots of noise while going to receive his visitors. He is very thankful for the program by the Foundation which has made a positive impact to his life.
