Free reading glasses for those who need them
As we age, our eyes gradually lose their ability to focus on nearby objects — a condition called presbyopia, which typically starts around age 40. Most people cannot afford reading glasses and most insurance does not cover optical costs. GLOBCOM's community distribution program changes that.
Presbyopia is not a disease but a normal part of aging — the eye's natural lens becomes less flexible, making it harder to focus on close objects like books, phones, or fine print.
Through partnership with CHAK, GLOBCOM has made reading glasses readily and freely available to the community. Since November 2024, the program has distributed reading glasses to over 4,000 needy clients across Alego Usonga sub-county — restoring the ability to read, work, and live independently.
No-cost distribution to community members aged 40+ who need vision correction for near work.
Community-based screening to identify presbyopia and refer those needing further eye care.
Education on age-related vision changes and when to seek professional eye care.
Targeting vulnerable groups who would otherwise be unable to access or afford reading glasses.
